Waterskiing with Over the Top Watersports

The Classic Thrill — Reimagined on Huntington Bay

If you’ve ever wanted to feel what it’s like to skim across the surface of a bay at speed, standing tall with nothing but water beneath you and open sky ahead, waterskiing is your sport. One of the most iconic watersports ever put behind a boat, waterskiing has earned its reputation over decades for a simple reason: it delivers. The moment you get up and find your footing, there’s nothing quite like it.

At Over the Top Watersports, we offer waterskiing experiences on Long Island for all ages and ability levels, from first-timers learning the deep-water start to seasoned skiers who just want access to great water, a great boat, and a crew who knows what they’re doing. We run sessions out of Northport on Huntington Bay, one of the calmest and most scenic stretches of water on the entire North Shore.

Waterskiing Locations We Service on Long Island

Over the Top Watersports offers waterskiing across some of the best waterways on the North Shore, including:

Long Island

Whether you’re a local or visiting for the season, waterskiing on Long Island is a bucket-list experience that’s more accessible than most people think. Our sessions are designed to get you up and riding as quickly as possible, regardless of your starting point.

Huntington Bay

Calm, protected, and consistently smooth, Huntington Bay is one of the best waterskiing environments on Long Island. The bay’s geography shields it from open-ocean chop, giving you the kind of glassy surface that makes learning easier and experienced skiing better.

Northport

Our home base and one of the most beautiful waterfront villages on the North Shore. Sessions depart directly from Northport, putting you on the water fast and in a setting that makes every run feel like it belongs on a postcard.

Exact riding areas and routes may vary based on weather, water traffic, and conditions. Your captain will always choose the safest and most enjoyable location for your session.

Classic Sport, Customized to Your Level

What makes waterskiing special is how much range it covers; it can be a mellow, scenic glide across calm water or a high-speed, carving run with slalom technique and serious athleticism. At Over the Top, we meet you wherever you are and build from there.

Never been on skis before? Our instructors will walk you through the deep-water start from the beginning, body position, how to hold the rope, what to expect when the boat accelerates, and how to stay patient while the skis surface beneath you. Most first-timers get up within their first few attempts, and the feeling when it clicks is one of those moments you don’t forget.

Intermediate or returning skiers get focused sessions on carving, edge control, and consistency, building the skills that turn a fun ride into a sport you can genuinely progress in. Advanced skiers can work toward slalom technique: dropping to one ski and experiencing waterskiing at its highest level.

No matter where you’re starting, our team will make sure your session on Huntington Bay is worth every minute on the water.

What to Expect During Your Waterskiing Session

01

Your session starts with a briefing on the boat — not a long lecture, just the practical information you need to give yourself the best shot at getting up on the first few attempts. Your instructor covers body position, rope grip, what the pull feels like, and the one thing most beginners get wrong (trying to stand up too fast — let the boat do the work).

02

Then you’re in the water, skis on, rope in hand. The boat moves out until the rope goes taut. When you’re ready, the boat accelerates — and your job is to hold your position and let the physics take over.

03

Once you’re up, it’s just you, the skis, and Huntington Bay. The boat tracks a clean line, the water spreads out around you, and the scenery — Northport Harbor behind you, the bay opening ahead — reminds you that there are very few better ways to spend a summer day on Long Island.

04

Between runs, you’re on the boat with your group. Music on, views out, everyone cheering for whoever’s behind the rope. Waterskiing is as good a spectator sport as it is a participant one — the energy on the boat stays high the entire session.

Professional Instruction for Every Skill Level

Our captains and instructors bring years of on-water experience and a genuine commitment to making every session count. Sessions are customized from the moment you step on the boat:

Patient, structured instruction focused on the deep-water start and getting you upright and comfortable on two skis. We’ve gotten hundreds of first-timers up, and we know exactly what it takes.

Technique-focused sessions building on your foundation — carving cleaner turns, crossing the wake with confidence, and developing the consistency that makes waterskiing genuinely satisfying.

Slalom progression, edge work, and high-speed technique with professional guidance and the kind of boat driving that makes a real difference at that level.

Every session is run with both a Captain and an instructor — the Captain focused entirely on driving, the instructor focused entirely on you. That dual-crew format is what separates an Over the Top session from a standard boat rental.

Top-of-the-Line Boats & Equipment

Waterskiing is only as good as the boat pulling you. At Over the Top Watersports, we run Malibu boats — built for performance, stability, and generating the kind of clean, consistent pull that makes getting up easier and staying up more enjoyable.

All equipment is provided. Skis, ropes, handles, and properly fitted life jackets are part of every session. You show up ready to ski — we handle everything else.

Perfect for Groups, Families & Celebrations

Waterskiing is one of those activities that keeps everyone on the boat engaged even when they’re not the one in the water. While one person skis, the rest of the group is watching, cheering, and getting ready for their turn; it’s a natural group activity that builds energy throughout the session rather than losing it.

Families with kids, friend groups, corporate outings, birthday celebrations, waterskiing sessions with Over the Top work for all of it. Mix it into a private charter alongside tubing or a sunset cruise, and you’ve got a full day on Huntington Bay that covers every kind of fun the water has to offer.
